Welcome to The City

As soon as I stepped foot in CA I felt  there was something special about this place. I had arrived in the bay area, the place to be for startups, entrepreneurs, investors, techies… you name it. San Francisco, or “The City” as most people like to call it here, is an actual burst of colours, […]

My First French Halloween

First French Halloween with Zahra L.J

When autumn comes, the leaves start falling and my favourite time of the year starts: the Holiday season, Halloween, ThanksGiving, Christmas, and the whole holiday spirit that goes with it (Zahra would call it the “Autumn spirit”). Plus being a great costume fan, I absolutely love Halloween.

The fact that we can dress up freely and be scary for a day is what I enjoy (plus all the candy from trick-or-treating).

Anyhow, for the first time in my whole life, I spent Halloween NOT GOING OUT TO TRICK OR TREAT … even though I had an amazing time with my best friend Zahra, we stayed in because of the country we live in.

Because YES my friends, in France, people do NOT celebrate Halloween how it actually should be celebrated haha (a.k.a no fun at all = French Style).

When I was young, Halloween used to be this AMAZING thing, my mom would arrange a huge party and we would invite all of my friends over, our house would look like a horror movie and we’d have an amazing time. We would then go trick-or-treating and come back home with tons and tons of candy and then watch movies under the covers in the living room with all the lights off (scary stuff when you’re an 8 year old).

At that time, Halloween wasn’t just this one day thing, we would prepare our home a few days in advance, decorating the whole house and the garden with spider webs, skeletons, crypts and millions of scary things. I would even build traps for my family and friends around the house so they would be surprised by them (I was a child, so lets get real … they weren’t ACTUALLY scary). We’d also go to scary mazes, and watch horror movies (I love them).

But it’s not meant to be a child-only holiday. Even in the past few years, I would get dressed up really realistically, with scabs and cuts and amazingly accurate things and we’d go out with friends to more “grown-up” events. And yes, I admit that I would also go trick-or-treating, but I had an excuse: I was there to accompany my Friends little brothers or sisters, but I can assure you that I had as much fun as them (a hundred times more).

Let’s come back to the present and stop our short time-travel. In France, people do not dress up, kids do not go trick-or-treating and even clubs do not celebrate Halloween the way it should be celebrated. By that I mean, it’s just like any other night out clubbing (no decorations or anything), the only thing is that if you come dressed in red and black, you get a free drink … let me say “WOOOHOOO”, things are going to get cray-cray, i’m being sarcastic here.

In other words, we boycotted “French Halloween”, by staying in and singing all night  and having a great dinner. We also talked of old times and basically, well, we had a great time 😀

So all in all, we had an absolutely amazing time and filmed it all in my latest YouTube video

Here it is :

My new oven….

I baked food …

So I received my new oven a few days ago and had to spend almost an hour figuring out how to install it in my integrated made to measure kitchen (JOKING, the installer guys did it for us  hihihi… Anyhow, it’s been sitting there for a few days, looking at me and pleading for somebody to use it. SO I DID !!!

The other day I went to the supermarket and bought loads of baking stuff (and ended up buy a lot more than what I needed, including chocolate, Nutella, pastries and much much more -> oh god why).

I got home and started cooking 😀

My home smells sooooo good and I’m sure it’ll still smell this good in a whole week .

Basically, I roasted vegetables with tomato sauce and herbs and spices. I placed Eggplants, Zucchinis and Tomatoes in layers and covered it all with a bit of grated cheese (YUM), I added some pepper, paprika, chilly, provincial herbs, oregano, basil and that’s about it 😀 -> AND GARLIC 😀

I then just shoved it in the oven and believe me, the smell coming out of that oven was simply majestic. I wanted to take that oven and get married with it.

So that was it 😀 we ate it for dinner with my beloved sister and had a great meal (here’s a pic)

VEGGIES Doesn’t that look absolutely gorgeous ?

The next day I made some kind of “boeuf bourguignon” but instead of using beaf I used sautéed pork cubes. I shoved it all in the oven with some red wine and herbs and garlic and onions and VOILA , the magic had happened : My flat smelled like heaven and the dish was like having a gastronomical orgasm -> no kidding… I didn’t take any pics though because, let’s get real, an oven made stew looks like shit 😛

Then I went on and decided to make some Low-Fire stewed eggplants that I would puree eventually, so i just put the eggplants with zucchinis and tomatoes (diced) and put them with water in a covered oven dish for 2 whole hours. And the result is delightful, here is a little sneak peak into it. (it’s a picture of how i stored it afterwards -> sexy huh ?)

YUMMYAnd finally, today, I cooked THE most delicious rosted meat EVER

I bought a rolled up roast (pork, lean, without FAT, well as little as possible), put it in a dish and covered it in red wine, zucchinis, a bit of water, loaaaads of herbs and more wine 😛

(go check out my video on my youtube channel of me cooking it 😀 )

And that’s all there is to say 😀

I’ll make sure to post more often and make them a bit more “in depth”

October Playlist :D

Hello everybody 😀

Here is a playlist the songs I’m listening to this time of the month 😀 (if I’d actually put up my whole monthly playlist the wordpress server would explode XD )

1 – David Bowie – Heroes (I just love this song, plus David Bowie is my hero, I love every single one of his songs)

3 – The Samples – Could It Be Another Change

4 – Dexy’s Midnigh Runners – Come On Eileen (Oh god, I dance soooooo much to this song, it makes me feel infinite)

5 – Imagine Dragons – It’s Time (I love it, nothing more than that, it’s a great song)

– Steve Jobs (1955-2011) –

Remembering Steve …

Today marks the two year anniversary of Steve Jobs’s death. How has the world been since then ? Where are all of the crazy people in the world the people who like him would have said : “I want to put a ding in the universe.” ?

Here’s to the very few crazy people that are left in our world, the creative, innovative and mind-boggling people. The people who like Steve Jobs woke up every single day with one single goal in mind : being THE BEST, changing the world and putting a “ding” in the universe -> “Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected.”

These people do not care about their wealth or the amount of digits in their bank account, they only want to change to world and to know that what they have done is the best and that they can not be outdone -> “Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me. … Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful … that’s what matters to me.”

So let’s all remember him for what he was, a crazy genius, a misfit, a rebel, a troublemaker, and yet, he was a genius. He changed our world (in his own way) and changed the way the tech industry works nowadays. He might have been criticised but he still was a great businessman, father, husband, inventor and much more.

As he would’ve said “It’s more fun to be a pirate than join the Navy.” so go out there and change the world, don’t just fall in one of the prefabricated models where you are expected to go. Innovate, Create and be Crazy.
